BUILT FOR THE LONG RUN

Sustainability is a mindset – a wish to do a little better every day. It’s reflected in every choice of material we make, every production method, and every act of care for people and place. We create furniture built to last, with low impact and room for the future.

Edsbyn Vinter

At Edsbyn, sustainability is a mindset that runs through everything we do – from how we design and produce to how we care for our people and our local community. Using materials wisely, thinking circularly, and building for the long term is a tradition that began as early as 1934 – when we started making spindle chairs from leftover wood from the ski factory.

SUSTAINABILITY THAT SCALES

Edsbyn began producing spindle chairs as early as 1936, making use of leftover wood from ski production. The chair shown in the image, Fanett T55, was developed in 1949 by Lennart Karlstorp, then head of spindle chair production, who designed a model that minimized both weight and manufacturing cost.

Environmental sustainability

Being resource-conscious is fundamental to how we work. We use materials that stand the test of time and design our furniture with reuse in mind. Quality and longevity are key to a product’s sustainability, which is why both internal and external testing – including strength, stability, and scratch resistance – is an essential part of developing new products.

All our MDF and particle boards are made from 100% recycled material. This is one example of how production waste is reused to manufacture new items. What cannot be reused is recycled or turned into briquettes used for district heating. Our production is order-based, meaning we only manufacture what is requested – reducing the risk of unnecessary production.

Many of our products carry an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and are certified according to Möbelfakta and the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. This means they meet a wide range of quality and sustainability standards. We conduct regular energy audits, are ISO 14001 certified, and undergo annual third-party reviews. We also place requirements on our suppliers, including FSC certification for materials. Through continuous improvements to our processes, we aim to reduce our climate impact and increase the long-term value of our work.

Social sustainability / workplace well-being

We believe that sustainable companies start with sustainable people.
At Edsbyn, daily walks are part of our culture. We encourage movement, balance, and recovery – not only for well-being, but because it nurtures development and quality in everything we do. We maintain a systematic approach to workplace health and safety, and we continuously offer opportunities for professional growth and skills development.
Enjoying work is not a goal in itself – it’s a prerequisite for making a difference, both in our community and for our own sense of purpose and joy.

The requirements of ISO 9001 and Möbelfakta also include how we work and how we set expectations for our suppliers in terms of social sustainability.

Design as a sustainable strategy

We see design as one of our most important sustainability principles. When form and function work together – and furniture is given the right expression, materials, and flexibility – both longevity and usability increase. Our furniture is created to evolve with organizations, to be reused in new contexts, and to combine in systems that stand the test of time. In this way, sustainability is not an add-on – but a natural result of how we think, design, and build.

A responsibility to carry forward

We have always seen furniture as more than form. It should endure, evolve, and be passed on. With responsibility in every step, we create furniture that supports both people and environments – today and long into the future.

About us and our history

Rooted in Hälsingland craftsmanship and looking ahead, we develop furniture and environments that evolve over time – often with a focus on the workplace. Since 1899, we have combined material sensitivity with forward thinking – from the spindle chairs of the Swedish home to flexible furniture systems for world-class offices and projects.
